Korean Society of Lymphedema; KSL

The Korean Society of Lymphedema aims to conduct research on the basic and clinical science of lymphedema, and investigate its prevention, education, diagnosis, and treatment. Based on Rehabilitation Medicine, the Society is established by clinicians, physiotherapists, nurses, and related paramedics from various fields of medicine (Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Nuclear Medicine, and Radiation Oncology).

February 2004

During the 1st Samsung Lymphedema Symposium and Workshop, the wisdom of many voiced the need for establishing a research group for the prevention and treatment of lymphedema. Prof. Jung Hyun Yang and 14 other people, who were interested in this group, came up with the title, the ˇ°Korean Lymphedema Research Group,ˇ± and elected Prof. Jung Hyun Yang as the President of the steering committee, and Prof. Ji Hye Hwang as the Treasurer, and planned to establish group regulations as well as prepare an inaugural general meeting at the next meet-up.

June 2004

President Jung Hyun Yang and 12 other people discussed the regulations of the research group, and decided to hold the inaugural general meeting and seminar on November 27, 2004

November 27, 2004

The inaugural seminar was held at the Catholic Institute of Medical Science wherein keynote speakers, such as Prof. Seiji Kato from Oita University, Japan, were invited. On the same day, President Jung Hyun Yang, Deputy Presidents Sang Yoon Park and Eun Woo Na, and Auditor Jung Sung Kim were elected at the inaugural general meeting, and thereafter, 15 directors including Treasurer Ji Hye Hwang were commissioned.

November 2010

Through the Board of Directors, it was agreed that a change from the research group to the academic society was required to increase its membership, attract medical interests, and represent the field, and therefore, a decision to proceed with the establishment of the Society was made.

November 2010

The research group was promoted as the Korean Society of Lymphedema, and successfully held the inaugural academic and general conference showcasing paper presentations, seminars, and workshops. The Board of Directors consisted of President Jung Hyun Yang, Deputy President Eun Woo Na, Sang Yoon Park, Treasurer Ji Hye Hwang, and 15 others. The Society had a total of 251 members (93 regular members and 158 associate members).

2013-2014

The Board of Directors consisted of President Sang Yoon Park, Deputy Presidents Isu Kim and Ji Hye Hwang, Auditor Soo Young Huh, Advisor Jung Hyun Yang, Treasurer Jae Young Im, and 15 others. As of 2013, the Society had a total of 593 members (160 regular members, 409 associate members, and 11 others).

2015-2016

The Board of Directors consisted of President Isu Kim, Deputy Presidents Ji Hye Hwang and Soo Young Huh, Auditor Tae Seung Lee, Emeritus Presidents Jung Hyun Yang and Sang Yoon Park, Advisor Eun Woo Na, Treasurer Jae Young Im, and 28 others. As of now, the Society has a total of 687 members (196 regular members, 481 associate members, and 10 others).

From 2004 to date, regular seminars and hands-on workshops have been held every November, and the Society is contributing to promote lymphedema as one of the critical medical conditions through raising awareness of the public and clinicians about relevant specialties in the lymphedema diagnosis, treatment, and research.

2017-2018

The Board of Directors consisted of President Ji Hye Hwang, Deputy Presidents Young Up Cho and Soo Young Huh, Auditor Jae Young Im, Emeritus Presidents Jung Hyun Yang, Sang Yoon Park, and Isu Kim, Advisor Eun Woo Na, Treasurer Joon Young Choi, and 23 others. As of now, the Society has a total of 891 members (223 regular members, 663 associate members, and 5 others).

2019-2020

The Board of Directors consisted of President Joon-Sung Kim, Deputy Presidents Young Up Cho and Kyung Hwan Shin, Auditor Joon Young Choi, Emeritus Presidents Jung Hyun Yang, Sang Yoon Park, Isu Kim, and Ji Hye Hwang, Advisor Eun Woo Na, Treasurer Jong In Lee, and 19 others. As of now, the Society has a total of 1650 members (366 regular members, 1284 associate members).

From 2004 to date, regular seminars and hands-on workshops have been held every November, and the Society is contributing to promote lymphedema as one of the critical medical conditions through raising awareness of the public and clinicians about relevant specialties in the lymphedema diagnosis, treatment, and research.
